There's this infomercial selling CDs of classic country, and there were a couple of songs that stuck out.

The Wild Side of Life - Hank Thompson
It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels - Kitty Wells

I did a little looking into it, and apparently, the first song (by Hank Thompson) was about a woman that cheated on her husband, and was living on "the wild side of life". He said, "I didn't know God made honky tonk angels", inferring that the woman is to blame for cheating. There's also this lyric: "you gave up the only one that ever loved you..." Yeah, whatever.

Kitty Wells recorded the answering song that same year. The song says that "It wasn't God who made honky tonk angels", and infers that, essentially, the women learned that behavior from their husbands, who like to pretend they're still single. YOU TELL 'EM, KITTY WELLS. XD

Watching that informercial was lovely. That old country drawling twang is pretty much gone, and it's nice to reminisce.

Alrighty then.

So, I don't have class on MWF, which is always lovely.

Government is 9:10-10:25 on TTh. I think I'm going to enjoy government for the first time ever. Professor is funny/easy-going, and a good teacher. There's a minimum 5 page paper due in April, but I don't think it'll be too bad. We have to pick a court case (doesn't necessarily have to have gone to the Supreme Court) and... write about it. What is was about, its rise to the supreme court, etc etc. I should probably pick a case soon and start researching.

Chemistry. Ugh. Lecture is from 7:00-8:15 on TTh, and the lab is from 4:15-6:45 on Th. I really hope I can get through chemistry this semester. With an A or B is even better. The professor says that tests will be curved using some statistics shit. Which is good. I think I'm actually going to learn (or at least try to learn) this semester, rather than skating by on memorization like I did in Chem 1. The professor assigns homework, for one thing. He works in the learning/tutoring lab at the Rio Grande campus, which is in downtown Austin. Normally, I wouldn't go near there, but there's a new parking garage down there now, so I might brave downtown to go get help on homework. I'll probably be doing that today. Maybe tomorrow, idk. Depends on how long I sleep today.

History class. Um... I guess it's going ok? I've started reading and doing the reviews for the first test. Also, by Friday of this week, I have to go take the map/geography test. Easy grade.

That's about it for ACC. On to Texas Tech!

I'M CHOMPING AT THE BIT TO GO BACK TO LUBBOCK.

I submitted my housing application fee and advance deposit on Friday night, so hopefully sometime today (hopefully?) I'll be able to finish the application and choose the dorm/room I want. More and more I'm leaning toward Horn/Knapp, which is an all-girls dorm complex. It's not a high rise dorm, only 3 floors, I believe. It's tucked into one of the corners of campus, and right across the street from the Student Union Building. Also, in Knapp Hall is the WISE (Women in science and engineering) learning community, so I'd like to get in that. I'm still debating whether or not I want a single room.

Reasons to have a single room:
- I like my privacy
- I'll be 23 when I move in. Most of the people in the dorms are 18/19. Sure, there are mature freshmen, but still.
- No distractions (aside from those of my own doing) from roommate.

Reasons not to have a single room:
- Kind of lonely
- Might be missing out on some social life

Oh, and another great thing about living on campus: BUS SERVICE. If it's too hot, too cold and/or windy, if I'm running late, or if I'm just feeling lazy and don't want to walk to class, the buses can either take me right to the entrance of the building I want, or in the nearby vicinity. This is a very good thing. LOL

I've been thinking about it, and I don't think I was ready for the whole university experience when I graduated high school. I didn't even apply to Angelo State until mid-Spring I think, and that was only after a representative came and said that if you graduate under the recommended/distinguished plan, then you have automatic admission. Plus, ASU was cheap-ish. I liked it there, but... idk. When I moved in, my roommate was very outgoing and effervescent, and I liked her (and her friends), but a few weeks after school started she moved to a different (nicer) dorm. And the roommate I was left with... was just kind of blah (lol like me kind of). In addition to that, I stopped going to classes not that long into the semester. So, not interacting with people via my roommate, not going to class, not going to social activities... meant that I stayed in my room, except to go out for food. That all just added to the depression. I wish now that I had just decided to take classes at ACC until I was ready to transfer- would've saved my GPA at the very least.

Anyway, now I am ready to go to university. I'm not even a student at Tech yet, but I'm already invested in the athletics- I watched/followed every Tech football game from about midway through the season til the Alamo Bowl (which they won! Go Red Raiders!). Basketball doesn't interest me so much, but I've kept a glancing eye on their progress. This Wednesday, the Red Raider men are playing at UT, and I'm tempted to go, even if their chance of winning isn't so great. I also don't know how crowded it will be.

Aside from athletics, I keep tabs on the events going on around the Tech campus, and I can't wait to get involved. I hope that through the learning community, classes, events, etc, that I will make friends and at least try to become more sociable. I'm going to try my damnedest to not lock myself in my room all the time. I'll try studying in the library at times, and, while having some down/alone time in my room, I'll try to keep it short-ish. Walking to other dorms for meals (and eating there) will help me meet people as well. I hope. I'm just not the kind of person that approaches people.

Going up to Lubbock on Feb. 15th for the visit day, and I'm getting antsy- I can't wait! I'll be checking out the dorms to make sure I know what I want, among other things. Also, Tech launched RAIDERspace this month, which is kind of like myspace for admitted students- a place to meet future classmates, interact, etc. There are blogs, discussion forums, etc. It's nice to meet people that are science/science related majors. Let's see how many "friends" I can accrue on there prior to moving in.

Well, I'm registered for Red Raider Orientation, and I'll be going for one of their one-day sessions on May 21st. I'll be signing up for classes, getting advised, taking placement tests, etc. I've been thinking a little about what I want to take- probably a biology class Ok, shit. I finally really read the course descriptions of the required biology/microbiology classes- I'm going to be taking way more writing intensive classes than I wanted. This suuuuucks. And most of them are biology classes, not microbiology. Anyhow, aside from that: I'm leaning more and more toward wanting to learn Italian instead of doing another year of French. So I might take the first semester of Italian. A humanities/multicultural class I'm interested in is Classical Mythology. I love mythology, so I definitely want to take that. Maybe a speech class? I'm not looking forward to that, but am debating taking it to get it over with. So that's 9 hours... a science class (either a chemistry class or a biology class [and those first two biology classes are both writing intensive!]) would bring the hours up to 13. To get to 15 hours, I could take something either fun/interesting, or easy enough that I can slack off somewhat. I'm ready to dive right into my classes. Or maybe a math class? I only need one more class, probably trig.

Also- I need to contact somebody about how my chemistry classes and my biology class will transfer. If the chemistry classes I've taken so far don't equate with their chemistry classes, I won't even bother with my chem II class this semester. Or maybe I will, IDEK. My government and chemistry classes start on Tuesday, and the history class is distance learning.

Next month, on February 15th, I'm going for the admitted student visit day. There will be presentations from the academic programs, and programming from other departments. Then, tours of campus, housing, and the rec center. I'm excited! :)

Reunion will be mid-July in... guess where... Lubbock! So, we'll be going up there for that.

Finally, move-in starts on August 21st, and classes start on the 26th. Welcome week is the 21st-27th.

So that all equates to 4 trips to Lubbock within the next 8 months!

As far as getting ready for Tech... I've applied for housing, signed the contract, but I still need to send in the deposit ($400! D:) before I can select a room/roommate/meal plan/etc. I'm also planning on getting started on my FAFSA, either today or very soon. The general scholarship deadline for transfer students is March 1, so I've got plenty of time- just as long as I don't get distracted with school this semester! I also need to contact admissions or... somebody, to get my primary email switched. I think they still have an email address on file that I used my senior year in high school for college stuff. I haven't accessed it in forever, and I'm pretty sure it's been dumped. So if they're sending stuff to that one, I can't get it.

As ever, Wreck 'em Tech! ♥

I've seen a couple of ads for this movie, and it looks really cute. Granted, it does have some people in it that I think are losers/douchebags (ie, Taylor Lautner, Joe Jonas), but I can overlook that.

Valentine's Day-- February 12th

This is one of those movies that have a ton of (big name) actors, with lots of stories going on at once. Similar to Paris, je t'aime/New York, I Love You, Love Actually, etc.

Rather looking forward to this! Maybe I'll see it before I go to Lubbock next month.

A little late, but I figure that my resolution can be to use my Livejournal more. I've had it for... a few years now, but up until this past summer/fall, I only used it for commenting on other LJs. Well, I'll try to use my own journal more, especially when I go off to Lubbock this fall! If I have to use the writer's block prompts and/or memes to post semi-frequently, so be it. :D

I remember my xanga (if you're really interested)... I used it in high school. There was a time where I posted to it almost every day, sometimes multiple times per day. Then I sort of fell out of blogging/journaling. Maybe I got boring? IDK. But I'm going to try and get back into the swing of things. (Note: I guess I've forgotten my xanga password, so I can't fix the little mess-ups on my page anymore. Dang.)

Also: changed my layout (again). This one will stay for a while, I think. So pretty, and the words aren't hard to read.

As for my exciting news- on Saturday, I got my acceptance letter from Texas Tech! I am so relieved! Now I can begin the task of completing the things I need for enrollment. I can't wait to be a Red Raider! I'm looking forward to going there. I'm planning on going up to Lubbock next month for the 'Admitted Student Day' that's happening for February- it's on the 15th.

So this semester will be busy-ish; I've got my classes, and then slowly rounding up the various records, etc that I will need for Tech. Also applying for financial aid.

Not much else happening at the moment.

I decided to dump my physics class, since it isn't required. Instead, I'm going to retake US History I and US Government for higher grades.

General Chemistry II

Tuesdays & Thursdays
Lecture- TTh 7:00-8:15, rm 1126
Lab Th 4:15-6:45, rm 1132

US Government

Tuesdays & Thursdays
9:10-10:25, rm 1108

US History I (distance learning)

That history class has the same setup as a western civ class I took... 5 tests, and then paper(s) for a B or A. I think I could pull off a B at the least from test grades, but for an A, a term paper is required. Blegh. Even so... I got a C the last time I took it, so an A or even a B would be an improvement to my GPA. Also, the last time I took government, I got a C in that. So a higher grade would be appreciated in that, as well.

Chemistry professor has gotten good reviews, so hopefully I will actually learn the material in chem II, as well as make a good grade.

Still waiting to hear from Tech!

You value wisdom, knowledge, and common sense over strength. Your strength is in the Force, rather than prowess with a lightsaber. But, you are not to be underestimated - you are still the ever-effective warrior. You are a peace maker and a negotiator, and you are defined by both your power in the Force and your sensitivity towards others.

You are Yellow; Sub-Colors: Purple & Black

You are Blue; Sub-Colors: Orange & Silver

You are Red

I was looking at the meanings for the different colors of lightsabers and found this quiz. Anyway, the blue lightsabers are characteristic of the Jedi Guardians- those that are more of the warrior type. Green is the Jedi Consulars- the more diplomatic/negotiating type. Yellow is the Jedi Sentinels.

So... now it's just a waiting game. I've sent in my updated ACC transcript that reflects this semester's grades- an A in astronomy and an A in algebra! Hopefully, I'll have my answer by the middle of January, but it may be as late as the end of January.

Tech has "admitted student visit" days- a day for admitted students to come and meet with an advisor, finalize housing plans, etc etc. I might go in February, or, if I get accepted early enough, in January.

I'm getting more and more excited, though I still worry over some issues.

So.. it's been a little while since I last updated. In that time, I have decided I am going to transfer to Texas Tech.

Last weekend (October 17, 18, 19 & 20), my mom and I went to Lubbock so I could attend University Day, which was on the 19th. In short: I loved Tech, even from what little I saw. The more I discover about Tech and all it has to offer, the more I fall in love with it. I can't wait to go there, and I can't wait to be a Red Raider!

While there, I attended a luncheon for prospective transfer students. I had been freaking out over how high my GPA would have to have been to transfer, and I was relieved to learn that with my number of transferrable hours, I only need a 2.25 or higher. I have over a 3.3. So yeah, I'm good.

Earlier, I submitted my application. I know I have assured admission, but I'm still a bit nervous- probably over the scholarship application than the actual admission application. Money is our biggest issue with going to a normal university again. I'll be relying heavily on scholarship money, free financial aid, and loans. (Loans suck, by the way.)

I found a sealed transcript from Angelo in the backseat of my car, so I need to get that sent off today. Also, I need to get a transcript from ACC. Hopefully they can fax transcripts? And, I hope to God that I don't need a high school transcript. Blarghhh. On the Tech website, it says something about needing an unofficial one for advising, but not for admissions. So... yeah.

One step closer to being a Red Raider! I can't wait! :D

(Oh, and... it just occurred to me that I will be a redshirt at Tech... unless I wear black. Bahahaha!)

What was your least favorite subject in grade school? What was your favorite? Did your love or hatred of those subjects change with time/age?

View 182 Answers

Well, let's see. In grade school/elementary school, my least favorite subject was... probably math. My favorite subject at that time was probably English/language arts, because I was good at it.

As I've gotten older, especially since finishing high school, I've become a lot more fond of science. I'm a biology major, even though I haven't picked a focus yet (although, I am VERY interested in a microbiology degree. Micro is awesome!). I'm not a fan of chemistry, and I have a feeling I won't be a fan of physics, either. I like algebra, but as I progress in the math subjects through trigonometry to calculus... IDK. I'm not looking forward to it, but it's inescapable if I want a science degree.

As for English... the older I got, the more I started disliking it. If I have control over what I write, it's fine. But various assignments = not cool. I took English comp last summer, and I was so burned out on writing by the end of the class. It might be different in comp II, which deals with fiction, but even so. I'm putting off taking more English class(es) for a while.

I've come to the conclusion that I've become more logic-oriented as I get older. I used to favor more creative type classes/assignments, but now... I like more science/math type classes. SHOCKING, I know. I still take classes that sound interesting, though they don't always work out. Last year, I tried taking a ceramics class, but a) it wasn't what I was expecting, and b) I decided I was nowhere near artsy enough to make it in that class. Or, a couple of years ago now, I took a geology class. I ended up dropping because I kept missing the class for various reasons, but I really enjoyed it- I like earth sciences. But, that's back to me liking a variety of science based classes. Of course, I'm taking astronomy this semester.

Speaking of astronomy, I've been stargazing a little bit lately. Last Friday night, my mom and I went out to my grandparents' house for dinner. They live out in the country, so it's darker/less light pollution. I found this thing on Twitter that alerts you when the ISS (International Space Station) passes over you, and it's a good view. Friday was supposed to be a good night, but it was also kind of cloudy, and the moon was bright. Needless to say, I didn't see it. But, I did manage to find the summer triangle, which is comprised of Altair (in Aquila), Deneb (in Cygnus) and Vega (in Lyra). That excited me.

Then, Sunday night, it was a clear night, and I got an alert saying that the ISS would be visible, and at a magnitude of -3.1. That is EXTREMELY bright, people! The brightest stars in the sky don't get much brighter than around -1. So I went out to one of the city parks that I knew would be darkish, and waited for the ISS. And I saw it! At its brightest point, it was as bright as Jupiter, which is really bright, considering that, at this time of year anyway, if there's one "star" you can see in the early evening, it's Jupiter. You can even see Jupiter on a somewhat cloudy night, next to the moon. But Sunday night, with the help of an app on my phone, I identified several other stars and constellations. I think I might have even seen a star cluster!

Tuesday night was the star party for my astronomy class. We met out in the hills of West Austin. Ironically enough, it was brighter out there than at the park I went to Sunday night, but whatever. There were also a lot of effing planes. Anyway, we did measurements of stars, and identified some constellations (one of the professors had this kick ass laser that shone all the way up into the sky- he pointed it toward a star and you could see the laser beam ALL THE WAY UP TO THE STAR. It was awesome!). Also, we looked at Jupiter and the moon through a telescope. By the end of that excursion, I was tired, sweaty, and just all around crap feeling. I definitely had a couple of margaritas at Chili's before heading home.

Well now, this post has gone on long enough, don't you think? Excuse my raving over astronomy, please. I'm just a big ol' geek. But seriously, being a Trekkie makes me even more interested in astronomy... it's not even funny.
